- Village of Newark wastewater system covers a service area of 5.4 square miles
- Comprised of storm water sewers, separate sanitary sewers, eight pump stations, and a 3 MGD activated sludge wastewater plant
- Wastewater plant originally constructed in the early 1900s with limited treatment
- First major upgrade done in the 1930s, with others completed in the late 1960s and the mid-1980s
- Plant discharge, which goes to Ganargua Creek, is monitored daily by the plant staff and the results are reported monthly to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
The Village Board has committed to continued improvements to the collection system and the treatment facility through grants and other revenues. Some of the recent projects and improvements in the last few years included upgrades or replacement of three (3) pump stations and the addition of a ninth one to prevent sewage flowing into the canal during high flows.
The plant is currently undergoing a $23,000,000 upgrade and expansion. This will include changing where the plant discharges from Garnargua Creek to the NYS Barge Canal. It also will include a new Influent Building, additional treatment tanks and a new sludge composite building. These improvements will allow the plant to meet the needs of the village residents for many years to come.
