The Newark Police Department has a long and rich history. On this site you can learn about that history and view some historic pictures. A part of the history of American policing actually comes from Sir Robert Peel from the United Kingdom. His principles of policing from 1822 are still very relevant to policing in the 21st century including the 2nd principle:
“To recognize always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behavior, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect.” (you can read more about Peel’s Principles here)
In the Newark Police Department we take pride in maintaining that public approval through providing professional service to everyone, every day. The mantra “to serve and protect” are the backbone of what we do.
As the Chief of the Newark Police Department, I believe strongly in the necessity for high standards for policing in a democratic society that must constantly respect the rights and freedoms of its citizens while balancing the need to enforce the law. Part of doing that means acting in accordance with the pillars of procedural justice: 1) being fair in processes, 2) being transparent in actions, 3) providing opportunity for voice, and 4) being impartial in decision making.
